The Burnt District Monument    

A unique monument dedicated to the women, children, elderly and families at the Cass County Justice Center,

       Contact author Tom Rafiner if you have stories, photos,artifacts or information about Order #11 and the Civil War in Cass County. His books on the topic are nearing completion and will offer a treasure of new, primary source information on the war in western Missouri. 

Cass County Quilt Documentation Project

Help us document all quilts made before 1960 with a Cass County connection. We provide the documentation form and a color 8 x 10 photo. We are also interested in Cass County Bicentennial Quilts made from the patterns published in the Democrat-Missouri in 1976. Bring quilts to the Cass County Historical Society during its normal hours: M - F 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.  More than 80 quilts have already been documented, but this is an ongoing effort to find as many as possible. Live auction at the festival, 4 p.m. Winning bidder is highest of the silent or live auction, need not be present to win.  CIVIL WAR MURALS ON HARRISONVILLE SQUARE

Mural artist Daniel Brewer painted the murals depicting scenes from the Civil War in Cass County. The first depicts the Kansas Jayhawkers raiding the Harrisonville Square in July , 1861. The second details the Younger family leaving their home in Sept. 1863 after Order #11 with the Federals burning it. The third features significant events, places and people of the Civil War in Cass County. Fundraising is under way to fund two  more panels illustrating the history of Cass County. Nine classic cars and 21riders met on the Harrisonville Square to drive the original route to Lee's Summit, KC, North KC and Smithville with stops along the route to learn the history. Great fun and great food in Smithville.
