Carry A.Nation

Carry Nation, the famous temperance leader, was born in Kentucky in 1846 and moved with her family to a farm in northwestern Cass County, Missouri, in 1855.  During the Civil War, the family removed to Texas to avoid the border conflict but returned right after its end.

In 1867, Carry married Dr. Charles Gloyd who became an incurable drunkard and died within a couple of years.  In 1877, Carry married David Nation and lived in Holden, MO.  Her marriage to Mr. Nation ended in divorce in 1901.

Known as the “cyclone in petticoats”, beginning in 1901 her ten-year crusade against tobacco and liquor was filled with fury and personal sacrifice.  Carry Nation died on June 9, 1911 in Leavenworth, Kansas.  She was taken to Belton, Cass County, to be buried in the family plot, next to her parents.
